Wassenberg Autumn Workshop 2026

Our annual autumn workshop will once again be held in Wassenberg in the Lower Rhine Area in Germany. Here is an overview of the most important information:


Pricing:

260€ per person (234€ for members of the EDMFA)


Included:

  • Instruction (theoretical and practical, in both group and individual sessions)
  • Lunch snacks and refreshments during the sessions
  • Dinner on Saturday evening at Restaurant Burg Wassenberg

Accommodation and any additional catering are not included in the workshop fee. We are happy to assist you in finding suitable accommodation nearby and can also provide guidance on travel, including nearby airports, rail connections, and other options.

Thomas brings extensive experience as a Drum Major of an RSPBA Grade One band and will lead the workshop.

He may be supported by additional experienced Drum Majors from the EDMFA to ensure that beginners are also given a solid introduction to the role.


What should I bring?

  • Mace (if available – otherwise please let us know when registering and we will provide one if possible)
  • Indoor sports shoes (non-marking soles) and comfortable clothing (no uniform required)
  • Interest in British band and military tradition
  • Basic understanding of German and/or English
  • Previous experience in a band (not necessarily as a Drum Major) is beneficial for overall understanding

What should I not bring?

  • Uniforms / full dress – the workshop is conducted in an informal setting
  • Weapons or blades (e.g. sgian dubh, dirk, etc.)
  • Recording devices (video recordings for training purposes are permitted only with prior approval from the instructor)

What will be covered?

The content of each workshop is tailored to the experience level and interests of the participants.

In general, the following topics are covered:

Theory on the history, role and responsibilities of the Drum Major within British/Scottish pipe bands
Dress and uniform standards


Structure of a pipe band and preparation for performances, including formation and massed bands


Practical drill and marching exercises, both individually and in formation with multiple Drum Majors


Commands (verbal and by mace) and conduct as or alongside a Senior Drum Major


Mace flourishing and competition drum majoring
