The Association

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Why a Drum Major Association?

The European Drum Majors and Friends Association is an association for Drum Majors and all those who wish to learn, develop, and pass on the fundamentals of Drum Majoring in the British / Pipe Band style.

Our aim is to preserve and promote the tradition, technique, and bearing that define this unique musical and ceremonial discipline.

The association is open to all interested individuals – from beginners to experienced Drum Majors. We see ourselves as a Europe-wide networking platform for exchange, development, and community within the Drum Major world.

Through international connections and active dialogue, we strengthen both the sense of community and the overall standard of Drum Majoring across Europe.

What Does the Association Do?

The association connects Drum Majors, instructors, and enthusiasts from different countries, providing a platform for professional exchange, mutual support, and shared development. We also warmly welcome musicians who simply wish to broaden their perspective.

As with any instrument or discipline, it is essential to have a recognised standard to guide development. Our work is therefore closely aligned with the official guidelines and standards of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA), which form the foundation for quality, technique, presentation, and judging.

We actively promote and teach a range of Drum Major styles, in particular the Pipe Band Competition Style, the Regimental Style, as well as other traditional forms.

Through workshops, band training sessions, and active exchange within the community, we encourage continuous learning, personal development, and a high level of professional standard.

The core activities of the association include:

  • Maintaining and passing on recognised Drum Major standards and techniques
  • Promoting discipline, professionalism, and leadership within the band
  • Sharing knowledge, experience, and best practices
  • Supporting newcomers and developing the next generation

Through this work, the association contributes to preserving, developing, and representing Drum Majoring at a high standard across Europe.
